Searching for “buy an American passport online” can lead to websites claiming that you can purchase a genuine U.S. passport without going through the official application process. However, a legitimate U.S. passport cannot simply be bought online. A U.S. passport is an official government travel document issued by the U.S. Department of State to eligible U.S. citizens and nationals after an application is reviewed and approved.
Understanding how the process works can help you avoid fraudulent passport websites, unnecessary fees, and potential identity theft.
Can You Buy a U.S. Passport Online?
No. There is no legitimate online marketplace where you can purchase a genuine American passport. The U.S. Department of State warns that websites claiming to offer unauthorized online passport services may be fraudulent and could put your personal information at risk. The Department specifically states that the only official website for eligible online passport renewal is its government-operated renewal service.
If a website promises a U.S. passport without citizenship eligibility, identity verification, or the required government application process, treat the offer as a major warning sign.
How to Apply for an American Passport
If you are a U.S. citizen applying for your first adult passport, you generally need to apply in person at an authorized passport acceptance facility using Form DS-11. You must provide the required documentation, photograph, identification, citizenship evidence, and applicable fees. The passport acceptance agent verifies your identity and has you sign the application.
For eligible applicants, passport renewal can be completed online. However, online renewal has specific eligibility requirements, including age, the status of your previous passport, location, and travel plans.
How Much Does a U.S. Passport Cost?
Current U.S. Department of State fees depend on the type of passport and whether you are applying for the first time or renewing.
For example, a first-time adult passport book currently has a $130 application fee plus a $35 acceptance fee. Optional expedited processing costs an additional $60.
Be cautious of companies asking for unusually high payments while claiming they can “sell” you a passport. Government passport fees are published by the U.S. Department of State, making it easier to compare legitimate costs with suspicious offers.
Beware of Fake Passport Websites
Searches for buy U.S. passport online, American passport for sale, or purchase U.S. passport may produce websites that look professional but are not government agencies. The Department of State advises applicants to make sure they are using an official .gov website and warns that unauthorized services can charge additional fees or expose sensitive personal information.
A legitimate passport courier can sometimes assist with submitting an application, but even a courier cannot simply sell you a passport. First-time applicants using Form DS-11 still have to appear in person at an authorized acceptance facility.
Use the Official U.S. Passport Process
If you need a new American passport, U.S. passport renewal, passport replacement, or expedited passport service, start with the official U.S. Department of State passport website. Verify eligibility, select the appropriate application method, prepare your documents, and pay the required government fees.
The key takeaway is simple: you cannot legitimately purchase an American passport online as a standalone product. A genuine U.S. passport is issued only through the authorized government process after eligibility and application requirements have been satisfied.
For the safest and most current requirements, use the official U.S. Department of State passport resources rather than websites advertising passports for sale.
